How to become a furniture distributor or dealer for a manufacturer

How to become a furniture distributor or dealer: market study, product groups, sales model, what manufacturers ask for, territory and planning the first order.

To become a furniture distributor, you study your market, decide which product groups and which sales model you can support, and then apply to manufacturers with your company documents, a description of your sales channels and display space, and a realistic sales forecast. Territory, pricing and the first order are negotiated with each manufacturer and set out in a written quote or agreement.

This guide is written by ellda mobilya, a furniture manufacturer in Kayseri, Türkiye, producing sofa sets, corner sofas, bed base sets and mattresses since 2010. We receive dealership applications ourselves, so the steps below describe the process from the side that reads them. If you already know you want to work with us, the dealership page has the application form.

Distributor, dealer, importer or wholesaler: which role are you applying for?

Manufacturers use these words loosely, so it helps to know which role you are proposing before the first call. A distributor buys from the manufacturer and resells to stores in a region. A dealer sells to end customers, usually from a showroom. An importer brings the goods into a country and may also be the distributor. A wholesaler buys in volume and sells to other businesses without a brand relationship.

ImporterForeign manufacturerOwn stores, dealers or wholesalersShipping, clearance, landed cost
WholesalerManufacturer or importerOther businessesVolume orders, no exclusivity expected

One company can hold several roles. A store owner abroad who imports a container and sells from two showrooms is both importer and dealer. Saying this clearly in your application saves time, because the manufacturer's questions depend on the role.

Step 1: Study your market before you approach a manufacturer

A manufacturer will take your application more seriously if it shows you know who will buy the product. Before you write, answer these questions for your region:

  • Who buys upholstered furniture and bedding here: households, landlords, hotels, contractors?
  • Which price bands sell, and which brands already occupy them?
  • What room sizes are typical? A 295 cm sofa suits a large living room but not a small flat.
  • How do customers expect delivery and assembly to work?
  • When are the busy seasons, and how far ahead do you need stock?

If you plan to buy from another country, add the import side: route, shipping time, clearance and the landed cost per piece. Our guide to importing furniture from Turkey covers those steps.

Step 2: Choose the product groups you can actually sell

New distributors often ask for the whole catalogue. A narrower start is usually stronger. Pick the groups that match your customers and your space, then grow.

Seating and bedding behave differently. Sofa sets and corner sofas are bought on appearance and fabric, so they need display. Bed bases and mattresses are bought on size and comfort, and they sell well as a pair because the customer needs both. If you can source both groups from one manufacturer, you can plan them in one shipment and deal with one contact.

Within each group, choose a small number of models that cover different price points and room sizes, rather than several similar ones.

Step 3: Pick a sales model: showroom, warehouse or project sales

Your sales model decides what you need to invest and what the manufacturer will ask about.

Showroom dealer

You display a selection of models and take orders from customers who see and sit on them. You need floor space in a location with footfall, display pieces and staff who know the fabrics and dimensions. Manufacturers will ask about your showroom size in m², its location and the other brands you show.

Warehouse distributor

You hold stock and supply other stores or deliver to customers quickly. You need warehouse space, handling equipment, delivery capacity and working capital tied up in stock. Manufacturers will ask about your customer list, your reach and your reorder rhythm.

Project sales

You supply furniture for housing developments, serviced apartments, hotels or offices on a per-project basis. You need contacts with developers and contractors and the ability to manage a delivery schedule. Manufacturers will ask about the projects you have in the pipeline and the specifications they require.

Many distributors combine two models, for example a showroom backed by a small warehouse.

What do furniture manufacturers usually ask for?

Every manufacturer has its own criteria, but most ask for a similar set of information. Prepare it before you apply.

Distributor application checklist

  • Company registration documents and tax number
  • Your role: distributor, dealer, importer or a combination
  • City, region and the area you propose to cover
  • Showroom and warehouse size (m²) with photos
  • Brands and product groups you sell today
  • Sales channels: showroom, online, trade customers, projects
  • The manufacturer's product groups and models you are interested in
  • Estimated monthly or seasonal order volume for the first year
  • How you handle delivery, assembly and after-sales service
  • Your marketing plan: launch, local advertising, online listings

A realistic forecast matters more than a large one. A manufacturer plans production around it, and a forecast you miss weakens your position when you later ask for better terms.

Territory and exclusivity: what to negotiate

Exclusivity is a negotiation topic, not a standard feature of a distribution agreement. Manufacturers that grant it usually link it to conditions such as a defined territory, a minimum purchase level agreed by both sides, a review period and the channels it covers (showroom, online, projects).

If you raise exclusivity, be specific. Name the territory, propose the volume you can commit to, and suggest how performance will be reviewed. Also ask what happens if the targets are missed or the agreement ends.

Competition law limits what such clauses may contain in some markets. In the European Union, for example, exclusive distribution and territorial restrictions are assessed under the vertical block exemption rules. Take local legal advice before you sign.

How should you plan the first order and range?

The first order sets the pattern for the relationship. Plan it around what you will display and what you expect to sell in the first season.

  • Display pieces first. For a showroom, decide which models and fabrics go on the floor and in which configuration.
  • Stock second. Order stock only for the models and sizes you are confident about. Bedding sizes must match your market.
  • Fabric choices. Limit the fabric and colour options you offer at the start. Each option adds stock or lead time.
  • Mixed loads. If you import, combine product groups so the truck or container is used well.
  • Reorder plan. Agree how you will place repeat orders and how long production takes, as stated in the quote.

Ask the manufacturer to confirm prices, lead times and delivery terms in writing for this order before you commit to a launch date.

What marketing materials should you ask for?

You will sell faster if you have good material from day one. Ask the manufacturer what it can provide:

  • Catalogues in PDF with model names and dimensions
  • Model photos you are allowed to use on your website and social media
  • Dimension drawings or tables for each piece
  • Fabric and colour references for the models you carry
  • Product descriptions you can translate into your language

Check the usage rights for photos and brand names in writing, especially if you plan to sell online.

Frequently asked questions

01What is the difference between a furniture distributor and a dealer?

A distributor buys from the manufacturer and resells to stores in a region, often holding stock. A dealer sells to end customers, usually from a showroom. One company can do both.

02Do I need a showroom to become a furniture dealer?

Most dealer programmes expect display space, because customers want to see and try upholstered furniture. At ellda mobilya the dealership model is for stores with a display area; businesses without one can buy through our wholesale page.

03Will a manufacturer give me exclusive rights to my territory?

Exclusivity is negotiated case by case and is usually tied to a defined territory, agreed purchase levels and a review period. Ask for any territorial terms in writing and take local legal advice.

04How much do I need to invest to become a furniture distributor?

It depends on your sales model: a showroom needs display pieces and floor space, a warehouse model needs stock and delivery capacity. Build the figure from the manufacturer's quote, your rent and your landed cost per piece.

05Can I become a distributor for a Turkish furniture manufacturer from abroad?

Yes. ellda mobilya reviews applications from buyers outside Türkiye and communicates in English, Arabic and Turkish. Apply on the dealership page or send an enquiry through the export page.
