Turkish bed base (baza) explained: a manufacturer's guide for importers

What a Turkish baza is (a storage bed base, UK ottoman divan), how baza sets are sold, real base sizes and headboard widths, and what importers should specify.

A Turkish "baza" is an upholstered storage bed base: a fabric-covered box that holds the mattress, usually with a lift-up top and a storage space inside. In the UK the closest product is the ottoman divan, elsewhere it is sold as a storage bed base or gas-lift bed, and the base is normally paired with a matching headboard.

This guide is written by ellda mobilya, a bed base manufacturer in Turkey: we have made sofa sets, corner sofas, bed base sets and mattresses in Kayseri since 2010. It explains what the Turkish term means, how a baza set is sold in Türkiye, the sizes and headboard widths in our catalogue, and what an importer should specify before asking for a quote.

What does "baza" mean in English?

Baza is the Turkish word for the base a mattress sits on. In Turkish catalogues it almost always means an upholstered box base, not a slatted frame or a wooden bedstead. Two Turkish qualifiers tell you more about the product:

  • Sandıklı baza: a base with a storage compartment inside (sandık means chest).
  • Amortisörlü baza: a storage base whose top lifts on gas struts (amortisör), so the mattress can stay in place while you open it.

The same product goes by different names in different markets. Use the table when you match a Turkish catalogue to your own range.

The names overlap but the products are not always identical. A UK ottoman divan, for example, may open from the side or the foot end, and storage drawers are another common divan format. When you compare a Turkish baza with a product you already sell, compare the opening direction, the storage depth and the leg or plinth style, not only the name.

How a baza set is sold in Türkiye

In Turkish furniture retail, a "baza seti" is normally the base together with its headboard, upholstered in the same fabric. The mattress is chosen separately, often from the same manufacturer's mattress range. That is why our catalogue lists bed base sets and mattresses as two of our four product groups.

Catalogue photos often show more than the base and headboard: bedside tables, a footboard panel or an upholstered storage pouf at the foot end. These pieces appear in the photographed arrangement, but a buyer should not assume they belong to the set. List every piece you want by name in your enquiry, and check the quote for what is included.

For a foreign buyer, this way of selling has three practical consequences:

  1. Your product line is two lines. You buy bases with headboards and mattresses as separate items, which lets you mix headboard styles with one mattress range, or source mattresses elsewhere.
  2. Headboards drive the range. In Türkiye the headboard carries most of the design: quilted chesterfield, vertical channels, wingbacks, panels with reading lights. The base underneath is often similar from model to model.
  3. The headboard width decides room fit, not the mattress size. The next section shows why.

Base sizes and headboard widths in our catalogue

Our bed base sets are made for three mattress sizes: 160 × 200 cm, 180 × 200 cm and 90 × 200 cm. Of the 29 sets in the 2025 bedding catalogue, 4 take a 160 × 200 cm mattress, 21 take 180 × 200 cm and 4 are single bases for 90 × 200 cm.

The headboard is a separate dimension. Across the catalogue it varies far more than the mattress size does:

Mattress sizeSetsHeadboard widthsExamples
90 × 200 cm490 cmAspendos, Carmen, Alya, Sude (single)
160 × 200 cm4160 cm to 250 cmAsperos, Beste and Star at 160 cm; Platin at 250 cm
180 × 200 cm21180 cm to 270 cmErciyes, Alya, Palermo at 180 cm; Nova at 240 cm; Chester, Business, Richmond at 270 cm

All figures are catalogue dimensions; small differences between production batches are possible. Confirm the current dimensions for any model in the quote.

Two models with the same mattress size can need very different walls. The Platin bed base set takes a 160 × 200 cm mattress with a 250 cm headboard, while the Asperos takes the same mattress with a 160 cm headboard. At 180 × 200 cm, the Chester has a 270 cm quilted headboard; the Erciyes headboard is 180 cm. If your customers live in smaller bedrooms, the narrower headboards are the ones to shortlist.

In the catalogue photos, 15 of the 29 sets are shown with a gas-lift (amortisörlü) base, including Nova, Chester, Erciyes and the four single models. Whether a lift-up storage base is available on the other models, or in another configuration, is something to ask per model.

Mattress sizes are not the same in every market

Our base sizes follow Turkish mattress sizes, in centimetres. They are not universal. The UK, US and GCC markets each have their own customary mattress and bedding sizes, and the names ("double", "king", "queen") do not mean the same width everywhere. A 180 × 200 cm base will not take a mattress made to a different national size, and sheets and toppers sold in your market have to fit too.

Before you order, check:

  • Which mattress sizes your customers buy, in centimetres, from your own sales data or local suppliers.
  • Whether you will sell our mattresses with the bases or source mattresses locally. If local, the base has to match the local mattress exactly.
  • Whether a different base size is possible for the models you want. Ask this in the enquiry; it is confirmed per model in the quote.
  • Height of base plus mattress, if your market expects a particular bed height.

UK and US buyers: rules to check first

United Kingdom. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 apply to upholstered furniture for private use indoors, and the guidance published by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute names beds, divans and mattresses within scope, with some requirements varied for mattresses and bed bases (Business Companion, reviewed October 2025). The regulations were amended with effect from 30 October 2025 (gov.uk). If you import storage bases for UK retail, state that the order is for the UK market in your enquiry. Whether and how ellda can meet the UK requirements for a specific model and fabric is confirmed per order in the quote; we do not assume it.

United States. The antidumping duty order on Türkiye is written for mattresses (Federal Register, May 2021); a bed base without a mattress is a different product, but ask your customs broker to confirm the order's scope for your exact shipment, especially if bases and mattresses travel together. Its tariff classification is a separate question: an upholstered storage base may be classified as a mattress support under HS 9404.10 or as furniture under heading 9403, depending on how it is made. Check the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule and confirm the classification with your customs broker before you order, as of October 2026.

GCC and other markets. Requirements depend on the country and the HS code. Ask your customs broker or agent which rules apply to upholstered bed bases before you finalise the range.

What to put in a bed base enquiry

A complete enquiry gets a quote you can compare. For bed base sets, include:

  • Model names exactly as in the catalogue (for example "Nova" or "Mini Chester")
  • Mattress size per model, and the mattress size standard in your market
  • Quantities per model and size
  • Whether you want a gas-lift storage base, where the model allows it
  • Which extra pieces you want quoted (bedside tables, pouf), listed by name
  • Fabric and colour preferences
  • Whether you also need mattresses, and which models
  • Destination country and port, preferred delivery terms and target date
  • Your market's compliance requirements, so they are confirmed in the quote

If you plan to buy sofas or corner sofas as well, add them to the same enquiry. Bed bases, mattresses and seating can travel in one mixed shipment, and the loading plan is shared with the quote.

How ellda handles bed base orders

We produce every model in our 10,500 m² factory in Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone. Base bodies and headboards are prepared, upholstered to the catalogue details, and checked for dimensions, stitching, surfaces and mechanisms before packing. You can see these steps on our production page. Products are packed for long-distance transport.

Price, minimum quantities, lead time and shipping terms depend on the models, sizes, fabrics and destination, so they are stated in the quote rather than in a price list. Our sales team works in English, Arabic and Turkish, and buyers can visit the factory by appointment.

Next step

Shortlist bed base sets by headboard width and mattress size, check them against the mattress sizes in your market, and send the list through our wholesale page. Export buyers can also use the export page.

Frequently asked questions

01Is a Turkish baza the same as a UK divan?

They are close. A baza is an upholstered box base that carries the mattress, and an amortisörlü baza has a gas-lift top with storage inside, much like a UK ottoman divan. Compare opening direction, storage depth and legs before treating them as the same product.

02Does a baza set include the mattress?

No. In Türkiye a baza set is normally the base plus a matching headboard, and the mattress is chosen separately. ellda lists bed base sets and mattresses as separate product groups.

03Which mattress sizes do ellda bed bases take?

The catalogue sets take 160 × 200 cm, 180 × 200 cm or 90 × 200 cm mattresses. Check these against the mattress sizes sold in your market before ordering, and ask in the enquiry if you need a different size.

04Are bedside tables and the pouf part of the set?

Not necessarily. They appear in the catalogue photos, but you should list every piece you want by name in the enquiry and check the quote for what is included.

05Do UK fire safety rules apply to bed bases?

The UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover beds, divans and mattresses, with some requirements varied for bed bases. State the UK market in your enquiry; what ellda can provide for a given model and fabric is confirmed in the quote.
